Flowers in the Attic meets The Family that Preys

Madison

When the rising tides of my life peak, I’m left struggling with the currents of the storm. My dad is a gambling addict, and it costs him everything. Mama bounces back quickly from the havoc Dad’s addiction causes. She proves this by getting a new man. Her Rico Suave is just the tip
of the iceberg—she moves us across state to live with him and his two sons. My older sister has no problem fitting in. Although I’m the total opposite—I am not a social butterfly. Taught to make the best of even the worst situations, maybe I should give my new family a chance.

My life finally seems to be back on track until a dreadful night, shatters my dreams. My world is
flipped upside down because of the consequences I must now bear. Thinking about that night torments me. For my sanity, I must keep the door to my darkest memory locked. No one will believe me if I set the truth free—not even my own sister.

Justin

After the heartbreak my future stepsister has suffered, I understand Madison being skeptical of her ready-made family. As we get to know each other better, we learn were two birds of the same feather. Our chemistry is undeniable, but if we tempt fate, will our relationship oscillate in the
balance?

Life seems to be falling into place until one night changes everything. What happens to her that she can’t even look me in the eyes. It’s like somehow, my face has scorned her. I want to be the key to her secret. But Madison won’t confess—desperate to keep her darkest secret locked away.

Review

This was an interesting read that was very involved, there was so much going on. I liked how all of the characters had their own lives and issues going on simultaneously. So many sub plots.

Written with style and performed to only heighten that!

Interesting, bold, exciting, a page-turner. Definitely holds your attention. Highly recommended!!!

About the Author

Audrey Gale long dreamed of being a writer, but never anticipated the circuitous road she’d take to get there. Can love defeat the greatest temptation … lust?

In a post-apocalyptic nation where the land of the free is now run under a dictatorship, there is one factor that holds the key to keeping world order—love. The new Regime controls the emotions of the heart. It’s their most vital law.

At the age of twenty-one, every citizen is forced into an arranged marriage. The only way to escape the arrangement is to enter the Temptation Trials—a government-sponsored reality TV show where the loyalties of the contestants are tested by Tempters and Temptresses who are impossible to resist.

Catalina enters the Trials as a Temptress in hopes that she can win the funds to save her brother. Sahara’s been ridiculed in the eyes of the public. By being a Temptress, she’ll be able to have a fresh start. The Regime promises that if she fulfills her role on the show they will wipe her slate clean.

The problem is that the Trials are rigged for failure. In all the prior seasons, love’s rival, lust, has proven to be more powerful. No contestant has ever won the Temptation Trials and be allowed to stay with their chosen partner. Lutheran Eminence, the world’s dictator, has shown that he’s the ultimate matchmaker.

As the Temptation Ball approaches, conflict is at an all-time high. Most couples are too hurt by betrayal to reconcile. With the odds stacked against them, Kincade and Tobias try to mend their relationships, hoping that the greater good will prevail. Attempting to uncover the true meaning of love may cost the contestants more than they bargained for—it may cost their souls.

Review

There is a great cast of characters here and I think that with the audio version the narrators both do a great job of brining them to life.

I like that the author writes characters who are REAL, they are not cookie cutter and they have their good and bad qualities.

I thought this was a great fantasy that really encompasses so many different aspects of the Fantasy genre, it’s very much adult with adult themes. There was adventure and mystery laced throughout as well, which I enjoyed. So many surprises and it was a great listen.

The Low Road by Jo A. Hiestand #blogtour #bookreview #audiobook #mystery #rabtbooktours @RABTBookTours

The McLaren Mysteries

British mystery

Date Published: Sept 19, 2022

photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Former police detective Michael McLaren arrives in Scotland, ready to immerse himself in the fun of the Highland Games and to enjoy a holiday with Melanie. But the old saying of plans oft going awry rears its ugly head: Simon Shaw, a member of McLaren’s folk group, dies. Murdered a year to the day following his uncle’s death.

McLaren is determined to find out who killed Simon. Needing justice for his friend is only half of his incentive. He also needs to appease his guilt for suggesting the group sing there in the first place.

As McLaren becomes immersed in the investigation, he wonders if the two deaths are linked, or have to do with the family or their clan. Perhaps Simon’s former wife killed him, bent on revenge more powerful than mere divorce. Or was the killing tied to an old hunt for diamonds? After all, diamonds aren’t only a girl’s best friend. Sometimes they birth greed and murder. And entrap the innocent.

Review

This very talented writer, Jo A. Hiestand, has created a thrilling, suspenseful mystery.

The Low Road seems like it is at the ending but several times continues with a new scenario. This was never boring or slow-moving.

There was so much going on, but the way everything tied together was interesting and fun.

I listened to the audiobook and thought Callum Hale did a very good job in narrating. I feel his “voice” fits each character and it was a soothing listen while also being exciting.

No joke, I listened the whole way through in two days. Perfect for those long road trips.

About the Author

Jo A. Hiestand grew up on regular doses of music, books, and Girl Scout camping. She gravitated toward writing in her post-high school years and finally did something sensible about it, graduating from Webster University with a BA degree in English and departmental honors. She writes a British
mystery series (the McLaren Mysteries)—of which three books have garnered the prestigious N.N. Light’s Book Heaven ‘Best Mystery Novel’ three years straight. She also writes a Missouri-based cozy mystery series (The Cookies & Kilts Mysteries, of which “A Trifling Murder” is the second book) that is grounded in places associated with her camping haunts. The camping is a thing of the past, for the most part,
but the music stayed with her in the form of playing guitar and harpsichord, and singing in a folk group. Jo carves jack o’ lanterns badly and sings loudly. She loves barbecue sauce and ice cream (separately, not together), kilts (especially if men wear them), clouds and stormy skies, and the music of G.F. Handel. You can usually find her pulling mystery plots out of scenery—whether from photographs or the real thing.
